There’s also lots of minor bugs and glitches that the Lego games are famous for, as well as an occasionally uneven frame rate in the open world hub. Everything else is largely as you’d expect, including the fact that, like all the expansions, the bosses are nowhere near as good as in the main game. His best gimmick though is his ‘merch gun’, which is in the film and shoots Batman-themed merchandise at people to stun them.Īs with each of the story packs there’s a new keystone ability, and it’s easily the most fun as it pulls in a part of three other dimensions for you to solve what are, for Lego games, relatively complex puzzles.
In terms of abilities the characters don’t vary much from the Batman-norm, although Batgirl can access a new kind of computer terminal, Robin has two different outfits, and Batman has a new detective mode. It also avoids the awkwardness from previous expansions where non-player and playable versions of the same character end up appearing in the same scene together. That’s another sensible decision, as it means you get all three principal characters in the one pack. You don’t get a Batman figure, because you’re supposed to use the one that already came with Lego Dimensions (even though the main story mode makes it clear that Lego Batman and Lego Movie Batman are not the same character). There are no story pack screenshots, we guess to avoid spoilers (so be careful of the video below) Even though the little Batcomputer is a more interesting backdrop than the other two story packs. This seems a much more sensible arrangement, as the new portals really are a waste of time and Lego. It has two figures (Batgirl and Robin) and a much smaller portal build. Especially as it’s actually a very good interpretation of the story, and unlike most movie tie-ins manages to get across the basic plot and themes while embellishing some aspects and curtailing others.Īnd although we just said that story packs only have one minifigure and one vehicle that’s not true for this one. This is a direct adaptation of the movie’s plot, so you’re going to ruin the film if you play this first. Besides, you’ll already know fine well whether you’re interested in this based on whether you liked the film and your history with the other Lego games. But Batman wouldn’t have got to 75-years-old if people didn’t enjoy going back to, roughly, the same thing every time.
There’s also been multiple open world Lego Gotham Cities, in fact there’s one in Lego Dimensions already – albeit it mixed together with Metropolis. Except of course there are already three standalone Lego Batman games, each bursting with unlockable extra characters that you don’t have to pay for separately. It’s also an obvious choice for a story pack in Lego Dimensions. Not everything is awesome – it’s not quite as good as the original Lego Movie – but it’s a treat for Batman fans, and one of the funniest cinematic comedies we’ve seen in years.
